Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

This proposal is for a new certificate of achievement entitled “Global Trade and Logistics”.  It would specifically cover the fields of global trade and supply chain management. Even though PCC already has a certificate entitled “International Business/Trade” which has courses in various business areas such as accounting, computer technology, personal finance, and international business, this new certificate would be more streamlined and targeted to just include courses that would provide students knowledge in general business principles, global trade, and supply chain management. At only 15 units, this certificate would provide students the chance to gain valuable knowledge and skills in these important business areas. Furthermore, the students could potentially complete the entire certificate in just one semester.

There are many career opportunities for students to work in the fields of global trade and logistics. Regarding global trade, most Fortune 500 companies have operations all around the world, and all of them have international customers. In a survey conducted by USForex, about 58% of small businesses already had international customers, with 72% planning on growing their customer base in the coming years. Working across countries and cultures is a necessity for the survival of most organizations.  These skills and business knowledge aren’t only necessary for senior managers, but for employees on all levels and from every department (FIU).

Regarding the Los Angeles/Orange County Region, there appears to be a supply gap for the following five middle-skill occupations in the region - transportation, storage, and distribution managers; logisticians; cargo and freight agents; production, planning, and expediting clerks; and first-line supervisors of transportation and material moving workers, except aircraft cargo handling supervisors. Furthermore, the majority of annual openings have entry-level wages that exceed the living wage in both Los Angeles and Orange counties, and more than one-third of current workers in the field have completed some college or an associate degree (Los Angeles/Orange County COE, 2021).
