Catalog Description

This program is designed for those interested in welding structural steel. Course work includes a comprehensive study with an emphasis on application of fundamental welding techniques and safe industry practices. Potential careers that the program prepares students for include, but are not limited to, Pipe Fitters and Steamfitters, Sheet Metal Workers, as well as Structural Iron and Steel Workers.

Program Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Demonstrate introductory level skills to produce quality welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process.

Program Goal

The basic occupational competencies students will acquire include: acquire the necessary skills to produce quality SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welds) in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions; able to interpret welding symbols and drawings required for entry into the welding and metal fabrication industry; be able to interpret the text, figures and tables found in AWS (American Welding Society) D1.1 Structural Welding Code book; be prepared for an entry level welding positions as a sheet metal worker, ironworker or pipefitter.

Program Requirements Narrative

This program will meet the needs of students who require certificates of lesser unit value to complete at an accelerated rate. Students who are part of the California Jobs Challenge will be the beneficiaries of this reduced unit load introductory certificate.
