Catalog Description

The certificate of achievement in Cyber Security Essentials program prepares individuals for employment in the Information Technology field in such positions as system and security technician. System & security technician may implement the organization’s network and information security. These workers may be called upon to educate users about computer security, install security software,monitor the network for security breaches, respond to cyber-attacks, and, in some cases, gather data and evidence to be used in prosecuting cyber crime. The responsibilities of computer security have increased in recent years as there has been a large increase in the number of cyber-attacks on data and networks.

This program is intended to help students develop skills to administer the heterogeneous operating systems with security emphasis. The courses examine and illustrate network security with various industrial leading network operating systems. Individual courses also assist students in preparing for related industry certification exams.

Upon completion of the program,students will be able to demonstrate the following Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

SLO#1-Install, configure and administer industry standard computer operating systems with security emphasis.

SLO#2-Configure, administer and troubleshoot industry leading network systems.

SLO#3-Understand a full range of security concepts & techniques.

Program Goal

This low unit Certificate of Achievement is a workforce preparation program that will provide the fundamentals of Cybersecurity for high school and college students who are interested in learning Cybersecurity practice of protecting networks, systems,programs, and data from criminal or unauthorized use. Students will learn skills of configuring operating system security, network security, Internet security, and so on. Students will develop skills at innovative solutions for existing and emerging industries. This certificate is a stackable certificate that will lead to a Certificate of Achievement (16 and 30 units) and AS degree(60 units) in Computer Network and Security Management which have been offered since year 2015 at West Los Angeles College.

 

With viruses and computer attacks being launched daily, computer security has been among the fastest growing industries in the world. As a part of homeland security, Cyber Security have become important topics in higher education.The certificate of achieve-ment in Cybersecurity Essentials program is intended to help students develop skills to administer the heterogeneous computer operating system with security emphasis. The goal of this program is to meet the needs of local industry by providing convenient and affordable learning opportunities needed for success in the field of Cybersecurity.

The major requirements are planned in sequence. Satisfactory completion of all courses with a grade of“C” or better in a given semester is required before the student may continue to the second semester. This certificate is a stackable certificate that will lead to a Certificate of Achievement (16 and30 units) and AS degree (60 units) in Computer Network and Security Management which have been offered since year 2015 at West Los Angeles College.
