Catalog Description

The Associate in Science Degree in Interior Design will prepare students in areas of design, technology, digital skills, drawing, delineation and rendering, structures, history and professional practice. Entry positions for which graduates who have received the degree may qualify for employment positions that may include those of draftsperson, delineator, salesperson, furniture designer, and assistant in coordination of colors, fabric, furniture, lighting systems, and exhibits. The A.S. degree in Interior Design has strong emphasis on both Architecture and Art.

Students who wish to transfer to a 4 year degree program should understand that each transfer institution has its own set of transfer requirements. Those different requirements can be found on the individual transfer institution’s websites.

Note that the program description below outlines only how students fulfill the major requirement for an associate degree. The CCSF associate degree has several other components, including general education requirements. Please meet with a counselor and read the Associate Degree Requirements chapter of the CCSF Catalog for complete information. Generally, minimum time for completion of an AA or AS degree is four semesters, depending on student preparation and the number of units completed per semester.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Most recently in academic year 2019-2020, four students completed the Associate Degree in Interior Design and nine completed the Certificate of Accomplishment. Enrollment is strong despite cuts the last four years in our classes. Completers are increasing in our certificate program. In academic year 2019-2020, we had 101 students in the Interior Design Program. We expect that program completion will increase over the coming semesters to reflect the continuing interest in Interior Design.

Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.
Upon completing the degree, students may enter the profession through a wide variety of employers such as junior interior designers, drafters, and set and exhibit designers. Opportunities upon entry into the Profession are varied. Current labor market index shows a 4% projected growth in SF Bay Regions from 2018-2023. For 2019-2020 Academic year, there are approximately 101 students currently taking Interior Design courses. The current Interior Design program includes one Certificate Program (15 units- Certificate of Accomplishment) and A.S. Interior Design. Many of the courses also will transfer to four-year Interior Design or Architecture programs. Based upon discussion with our Advisory Board, it was determined that revisions were recommended to improve more course selections and improve the number of completers.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
We do not anticipate any adverse impacts on other colleges in the service area. Our student population are mainly in the SF county. There are 3 other colleges with Interior Design Degrees/Certificates in the East Bay: Chabot College (East Bay) Las Positas College (East Bay) Ohlone College (East Bay).

The Architecture Department Chair of City College of San Francisco reached out to the head of the Interior Design program, Elsa Torres (Canada College, CSM campus with the Interior Design program). They met through Zoom today 10/1/2020. Elsa is OK with CCSF's Core Skills Interior Design, CAch proposal and Interior Design, AS proposal. CCSF's interior design programs are non-competing. CCSF is more Architecture/Interior Design focused. CSM has more specialized programs within Interior Design, such as Kitchen and Bath and Home Staging. CCSF also draws from a different population. Our students are mostly from San Francisco County.
