This is an 18 unit Certificate of Achievement

Upon completion, students will be able to:

Apply professional standards of practice to the care and education of children and families as they apply to school age learning settings.

This Certificate is for persons seeking employment or who are employed in school age childcare programs and elementary school settings.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Estimated completions of this Certificate are 10 students per academic year. Students can use this certificate as a milestone completion on their pathway to completion of a transfer degree (either the Early Childhood Education AS-T or the Elementary Education AA-T).

Program Goal

This Certificate is multidisciplinary and is the integration of the Child Development and the Education coursework and curriculum.

This Certificate is for persons seeking employment or who are employed in school age childcare programs and elementary school settings.

This Certificate can be completed in one semester and one intercession or within the fall and spring semester (Academic Year).

This Certificate includes the coursework that is required for transfer into the CSU system, specifically a pathway into the Liberal Studies major that leads to a teaching credential. 

This Certificate can assist students that are already employed as teacher's assistants (TA) with unified school districts, to maintain a minimum unit enrollment per academic year, while employed as a TA. This is a feature of the goals of workforce development and Career Education.

Program Requirements Narrative

Students will be required to complete six (6) 3-unit courses in Child Development and Education.  Four (4) of the six courses required for this Certificate are offered in 16 week offerings and in short-term offerings (8 week sessions), making it possible for students to complete multiple courses in one semester. There are no pre-requisites to any of the courses required in this certificate which allow students to enroll and complete courses in a flexible and efficient manner. 

The combination of Child Development and Education coursework offers the student a broad scope of information for developing knowledge, skills, and dispositions for effectively and developmentally appropriately working with schoolage children.
