The Basic Electrical Training certificate is designed for individuals seeking basic qualifications to be hired
or promoted as helpers in electrical maintenance positions. The certificate is designed as the entry point
for more advanced training leading to specializations in automation, electrical technology, or electro-
mechanical qualifications. All the classes included in the Basic Electrical Training Certificate of
Achievement are approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards as officially recognized classes
for the training of electrical trainees (ET) in the State of California.

The Basic Electrical Training Certificate of Achievement is a necessary step to accomplish the strategic
goal of harmonizing Modesto Junior College’s Industrial Electronics and Electrical technology programs
with the vision and goals of the Guided Pathways project (as defined by the California Community
Colleges Chancellor Office.) In the pursuit of that strategic objective, MJC proposes the rearrangement
of these programs in a sequence of smaller, and therefore shorter, programs leading to the Industrial
Electronics, the Electrician, or the Electro-Mechanic certificates of achievement. In such spirit, the
specific goal of the Basic Electrical Training Certificate of Achievement program is to initiate students in
the electrical field opening the opportunity for further training in automation, electrical installations, or
electrical or industrial maintenance.
The Basic Electrical Training CoA provides the initial classes in electrical technology with immediate
practical application in the workplace (for students employed in manufacturing or construction
industries,) or as an introduction to the area (for students not employed in manufacturing or
construction industries.) Students who accomplish this first level of technical training will acquire
employability value and will find an incentive to further their skills following manageable milestones.
This new certificate will be the first stage in a sequence of stackable certificates leading to major awards
(Industrial Electronics CoA, Electrician CoA, or Electro-Mechanic CoA.)
