Catalog Description
The Administration of Justice: Law Enforcement Associate Degree program offers curriculum to prepare students with knowledge and skills necessary to complete a law enforcement field training program certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). Graduates from the basic core courses may be eligible for employment opportunities in government entities such as State, County and City Law Enforcement agencies specializing in police services, and private enterprise where law enforcement principles are applied.

Since 2009 Imperial Valley College has successfully presented (41) 832 PC courses, (15) Modular Format Level III courses and (14) Modular Format Level II courses. P.O.S.T. Region 10 Consultant Valna Wilson can verify that Imperial Valley College has cooperated and complied with all of the rules and regulations of P.O.S.T. as well. Physically, Imperial Valley College (IVC) is considerably distant from the other academies. The distance from IVC to Palomar College is 133 miles, to Southwestern College is 120 miles, and to Golden West College is 211 miles. Similarly, San Diego Regional Public Safety Academy at Mira Mar College is 134 miles from IVC and Ben Clark Training Center in Riverside is 164 miles away. There are no competing academies in Imperial County. With the addition of the POST 164 course to our college inventory we are now offering all the courses required to certify students for completion of the POST academy. Based on the projected data, it is anticipated that 40 students annually will complete the program. LMI projections note a need for 85 completers per year.

Program Goal
Designed to satisfy the Regular Basic Course Modular Format Training Standards set forth by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and also found in California Code of Regulations, Title 11 Division 2 and Penal Code sections 13500 et seq. The program includes law, patrol techniques, arrest and control, use of force, investigative report writing, cultural diversity, firearms and chemical agents, collection and presentation of evidence, weapons law, crimes against children, juvenile law, controlled substances, ABC law, emergency vehicle operations, domestic violence, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, physical fitness and nutrition (lifetime-fitness), gangs, First Aid/CPR/AED, custody, criminal justice system, etc. and required state exams. Supply fee may be charged. The program is designed to prepare students to be hired by a law enforcement agency as a Level I Reserve Officer or full-time Peace Officer in the State of California.

Program Requirements
To qualify for the program, applicants must: 1. Be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or G.E.D. 2. Complete and submit an Imperial Valley College Law Enforcement Academy application 3. Pass the P.O.S.T. written examination and physical agility test. 4. No felony or domestic violence convictions 5. Possess a valid California Driver’s License and provide a DMV printout of their driving record 6. Ability to successfully participate in physical requirements of the course 7. U.S. Citizen or have filed for U.S. Citizenship 8. Must pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) background clearance letter for firearms possession. This clearance must have been conducted within 90 days of the start of the class Required Core Courses: Units Sequence POST 160 Regular Basic Course Modular Format Level 3 10.0 Year 1, Spring POST 162 Regular Basic Course Modular Format Level 2 13.5 Year 1, Fall POST 164 Regular Basic Course Modular Format Level 1 17.5 Year 2, Spring Total Units 41.0 41.0 Courses must be taken in the sequence listed above.
