Program Goal

The goal of the Maker Studies Certificate is to prepare students for the SF Bay Area economy, where these multidisciplinary skill sets are in demand. By including targeted courses from select programs, Maker Studies students gain technical depth in STEAM and CTE offerings that feature hands-on learning, technology, and 21st century skill development.

Workforce examples include digital fabrication such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and related technologies; custom fabricators that uses technology tools to design and construct on spec; makerspaces which are becoming more and more professionalized and serving as entrepreneurship hubs for new businesses and opportunities; and product design and development in many areas, such as IoT (internet of things), and its related software, hardware and networking.

In addition to the technical skill set, the Maker Studies certificate prepares for employment in jobs that are emerging or have not yet been identified, and offers a broad skill set that future proofs students from automation and rapid change in existing occupations.
