The Certificate program Commercial Music: DJ Producer is designed to prepare students with comprehensive music, DJ techniques and technology skills. This program will offer courses including DJing, electronic music composition, songwriting and arranging, studio recording, and live sound reinforcement, which focus on building a strong professional foundation. This program creates opportunities for students to compose, arrange and produce both music and artists in a variety of contemporary classical and popular musical styles. This certificate program will create a pathway for success for DJ Producer students.
As the certificate proposed is a new certificate, no integrated data regarding the projected numbers of graduates is currently available. According to existing data, LAVC Commercial music expects to graduate 27 student completers, effective Spring 2021, given enrollment in the DJ Workshops 1, 2 and 3 that currently are being offered.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The goal of the Commercial Media: DJ Producer Certificate of Achievement is to provide Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities in DJing, Computer Technician and Commercial Music Composer and Producer positions. Emphasis is on demonstrating Rekordbox in a live DJ performance, composing original music, producing original music recordings, demonstrating techniques for self-promotion, explaining and describing technological musical vocabulary related to DJ music production, and recording and mixing vocals. Upon completion of this program a student should be able to demonstrate skills necessary to perform entry level functions and begin to achieve success as a Commercial Media DJ Producer.
The proposed certificate is comprised of current courses from established Commercial Music curriculum. The grouping of these courses into a certificate is part of an overall plan for students to gain employment in areas of high demand.

Course Report
As a number of students plan to enter the job market after the completion of the Commercial Media: DJ courses, those students who do not have the advanced skills to complete their two years related courses for transferring to four-year colleges will have the opportunity to learn essential DJ skills to enter the job market. This program will prepare the students to work as apprentice DJs, as well as in support positions in many disciplines including music composition, production, entrepreneurship, branding, marketing, and small business administration. Our DJ courses also prepare our students for transfer to a four-year university, particularly in the highly sought programs in Commercial Music and Music Technology. This certificate will significantly improve CTE enrollment, completion, graduation rates, and gainful employment.
