Catalog Description

The Biomanufacturing Technician Certificate of Achievement provides training in the theory as well as the practical applications of processes in an industrial biomanufacturing environment. Students gain hands on experience in producing a biologic from start to finish while acquiring skills in quality control, quality assurance, environmental monitoring, and technical writing. This certificate prepares students to enter the workforce as a technician in a research-focused biology lab, a biomanufacturing technician in a regulated setting, or other similar occupations in the food, drug, and biofuels industries.

Program Goal

The goal of this certificate is to prepare students to work as biomanufacturing technicians in the industrial biotechnology sector. These students will be trained in the culturing of cells, the production of biologics, and their subsequent purification. Not only will students gain experience in biomanufacturing, they will also receive training in technical communication and regulatory compliance, two areas that are often lacking in job candidates applying to biomanufacturing technician positions.

Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The Introduction to Biotechnology course provides students with basic theoretical and practical knowledge about biology and biotechnology. In Techniques in Cell and Molecular Biology, students build upon their knowledge from Introduction to Biotechnology and perform additional laboratory techniques including cell culture. Students become familiar with principles of quality, current good manufacturing practices, and proper documentation in Quality and Regulatory Practices in Biomanufacturing. Technical Communication for Regulated Environments will guide students to write and give oral presentations on technical content effectively. Finally, students will perform the processes involved with biomanufacturing in the Biomanufacturing course.
