The Administration of Justice Certificate of Achievement in Corrections is designed to prepare students to meet the needs of entry-level positions in the field of corrections. The curriculum prepares students with a foundation in administration of justice/law enforcement and provides them with the knowledge to enter varied career areas. The skills developed during class will enhance the student’s knowledge in the area of corrections.
We project 10 annual completions.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Program Goals and Objectives (Must address a valid transfer preparation, basic skill, civic education, or local purpose)
The purpose of the Certificate of Achievement in Corrections is to provide the student with selected basic core courses to meet the needs of entry-level positions or re-skilling of current public safety professionals in preparation for employment/promotion in the field of corrections. The Administration of Justice certificate program consists of courses in Introduction to Corrections, Control and Supervision in Corrections, Legal Aspects of Corrections, Interviewing and Counseling Skills for Correctional Officers.
Upon completion of the course curriculum, the student will have a general and basic understanding of the administration of the justice system and all of its associated issues, including the ability to:
- Apply legal definitions, concepts, and principles to law enforcement, courts, or correctional settings.
- Communicate information in a clear and organized manner.
- Demonstrate the basic steps of interviewing and interrogation and write a satisfactory report of an interview or interrogation
- Analyze ethical dilemmas encountered in the law enforcement and/or correctional fields and decide on the correct ethical choice.
- Adapt to the diverse and multicultural nature of American society in the criminal justice system.
- Demonstrate and explain the development of roles and responsibilities of clients and staff.
- Contrast the court procedures that occur from arrest through appeal.
- Discuss the legal aspects of courtroom criminal evidence, especially as they apply in California courts.
- Discuss the various types of evidence presented in court.
- Articulate knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level positions within various parts of the profession, including understanding contemporary issues in the field.
Specific Objectives of the Degree/Certificate
The Administration of Justice program is intended to meet the mission of Rio Hondo College and the California Community College Chancellor’s Office by:
- Serving the general community in making the numerous courses related to the needs of careers within the Administration of Justice.
- Meeting the needs of a growing career field in Public Safety as noted by the CCCCO’s Public Safety Advisory Committee for new skill attainment and re-skilling professionals in current Public Safety careers.
- Providing students with technical preparation for employment in the Administration of Justice field.
- Offering students with an interest in pursuing a career within Administration of Justice the knowledge to work in this diverse and growing field.
- Addressing California’s economic growth by focusing on the current needs of regional employers with an emphasis on Administration of Justice.

Course Report
Rio Hondo College has a long history of providing certified educational and
professional programs in law enforcement and fire services. The District is
accredited:
- By the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) to operate a Regional Law Enforcement Training Center presenting the Basic Recruit Training Program (Police Academy) and Advanced Officer Training through various courses.
- By the California State Fire Marshal’s Office (CSFM) to operate a Regional Fire Training Center presenting the Basic Recruit Training Program (Fire Academy) and Advanced Officer Training through various courses.
- By the California State Fire Marshal’s Office (CSFM), California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to operate a Regional Homeland Security Training Center presenting advanced training for inservice First Responders in law enforcement, security, fire services and other careers related to public safety.
- The Administration of Justice Certificate program has been recommended by members of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association, the Rio Hondo College Police Academy Advisory Committee and Administration of Justice Faculty.
