Catalog Description

The Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck program offers courses to prepare students for an entry level position in the medium and heavy truck industries. The program trains in the major system areas of heavy-duty trucks and is divided in accordance to the National Institute for Automotive ServiceExcellence (ASE) areas of testing of the T-series certification tests. The program will be subdivided to offer training in stackable certificate areas. The first certificate in the program is the Diesel Engine Service TechnicianCertificate.

Upon completion of the required courses, students will receive the Diesel Engine Service,Diagnosis and Repair Technician Certificate. This certificate requires the completion of preventative maintenance, engine and engine control and electrical/electronic courses which provide the fundamentals necessary for the servicing of diesel engines. Students completing this certificate would be prepared to work as entry-level technicians on diesel engines operating multiple equipment types including on-highway trucks, off-highway heavy equipment and stationary diesel power generation. This certificate would be the first in the stackable series of certificates for the MTRK program which includes the Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck Service, Diagnosis and Repair MasterTechnician Certificate and the Stationary Power Generation Service, Diagnosis and Repair Technician Certificate.

Program Goal

The goals of the Medium and Heavy-DutyTruck program include building a program that would provide the training needed in the technical areas of repairing, maintaining and diagnosing of medium and heavy truck systems. The Diesel Engine Service, Diagnosis and Repair TechnicianCertificate would include the core courses needed to obtain employment in the service sectors that specifically service diesel engines as the prime mover.Obtaining the certificate would include successfully completing the preventative maintenance course, diesel engine repair and diesel engine management courses and two electrical and electronic systems courses. This would provide the basis for students wishing to complete the Medium andHeavy-Duty Truck Service, Diagnosis and Repair Master Certificate and/or theStationary Power Generator Service, Diagnosis and Repair TechnicianCertificate. This would also increase the employability of the student as it would allow potential employers to recognize the student’s specific training areas and preparedness for employment.

The Diesel Engine Service,Diagnosis and Repair Technician Certificate requires 28 units to be completed in the areas listed previously. These courses will prepare students for theNational Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Truck Series(T-Series) Exams in the certification areas of T2 – Diesel Engines, T6 – TruckElectrical and Electronic Systems, T8 – Preventative Maintenance and L2 –Advanced Level Diesel Engines. Program Learning Outcomes of this course of study include students having the knowledge and ability to explain the theory of operation of diesel engines and their related sub-systems, demonstrate safety procedures when working on diesel engines and related electrical systems, communicate effectively to owners and operators of diesel powered trucks the required maintenance and repairs needed, demonstrate a thorough understanding of workplace expectations and apply proper troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and repair diesel engines.
