The Professional Practices in Music I Certificate Program at Modesto Junior College provides aspiring and established music professionals with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for job opportunities in the expansive field of music. The program is designed for students to develop or expand relevant real-world skills through coursework and hands-on professional experiences.  Classes include music fundamentals and theory, group piano instruction, private applied lessons on a primary instrument, group instruction on a secondary instrument, and electives that focus on Music Education, Music Business or Music Therapy.

Program Goal

Upon satisfactory completion of this program, the student should be prepared to:


1. Demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument.


2. Demonstrate proficiency on piano and a secondary instrument.


3. Demonstrate competency and understanding of music fundamentals and diatonic harmony.


4. Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles, current industry benchmarks, and necessary professional workplace skills in your elective area.


Upon successful completion of the Professional Practices in Music I Certificate students will have measurable musical and instructional competencies which will enable them to succeed in entry level jobs at a variety of educational and musical organizations.  The skills will benefit the students in personal, educational, and career settings.
