The Child Development Level I is designed for the student who desires general knowledge about the foundations of child development and who has an interest in teaching young children. This certificate meets the Title 22 education requirements for a fully qualified teacher. In Title 5 programs, this certificate meets the educational requirements for an Assistant/Aide position. This certificate includes the identified core courses for the Associate Teacher Child Development Permit.Fifty (50) days of experience is required to complete the permit requirements.

Program Requirements Narrative

Students completing this certificate will work effectively with children 0 – 8 years old in different capacities, both public and private programs.  Based on the data compiled by the Los Angeles/Orange County Center of Excellence for Labor Market Research, it appears there is an unmet need for individuals who qualify to work in the field of child development and early care/education in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

This finding is based on the following:

The Los Angeles/Orange County labor market information indicates a growth for all areas of the early childhood field.  More than 10,600 job openings will be available annually due to replacement need (e.g.retirements).

Over the past 12 months, there have been 5,769 online job postings related to child development and early care/education in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Last year, five other related program recommendation requests were received from regional community colleges. Twenty-three colleges in the region have child development/early care & education, and preschool age children programs.
