The Professional Certificate in Interior Design is a professional-level certificate that allows re-entry students with bachelor's and advanced degrees who are not able to pursue baccalaureate degrees in the California State University system, students who do not intend to pursue bachelor's degrees, and/or those who choose to obtain a certificate to practice interior design, the opportunity to obtain training to effectively enter the workforce and the interior design profession.

Program Goal

The goals and objectives of the Interior Design Professional Certificate are to prepare students to practice in various facets of the interior design profession.  The program provides a comprehensive, professionally-focused curriculum focused on the basic and essential aspects of interior design with an emphasis on practical application in the field.  When available and appropriate, students have the opportunity to engage in internships and participate in design-related competitions to reinforce the classroom learning experience. The Interior Design Certificate is a professional-level certificate that affords students the opportunity to obtain pertinent training needed to effectively enter the interior design profession.

This program provides career and technical education to prepare students for career opportunities in:

2.  architectural firms

3.  kitchen and bath design firms

4.  retail finishes and furnishings stores

This 60 unit Interior Design Professional certificate will replace the current Interior Design certificate and provide more flexibility and training for students. Once this certificate has been approved, the current Interior Design certificate will be deactivated.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
In the immediate service area one other community college, Canada College, offers a program in Interior Design. The Canada College Interior Design program does not offer a choice of a residential or commercial emphasis nor do they have any studio format courses, in contrast to this program. In addition, the West Valley College Interior Design Program has several courses not offered in any other local community college including Interior Construction and Building Systems, Design Detailing, Design of Historic Interiors, Advanced Residential Design, and Advanced Commercial Design.\
