Catalog Description

This certificate provides opportunities for students interested in the installation in both residential and commercial settings,maintenance and repair of a broad spectrum of electronic-based equipmentclassified as low voltage. The Low Voltage Systems Technician (LVST) also installs remote monitoring systems in commercial applications and can retrofit current systems with remote monitoring technology.  The LVST program uses The National Center forConstruction Education Research (NCCER) curricula that includes competency-basedassessments. NCCER is a national industry-recognized credential with Departmentof Apprenticeship Standards.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Student will be prepared with skills in Low Voltage systems that include: Video, Audio, Data, Fire Alarms, Security System, Access Control, Wireless technology in lighting and remote control, and Smart Panel Instrumentation.
  2. Students will be prepared with skills, fundamentals theories, and installation of Fiber Optics.
Enrollment Completer Projections

The pathway is designed as a 2 semester program. EWIR 105, EWIR 106, EWIR 107, and EWIR 108 are new courses included in programrequirements to be in conformance with the National Center for Construction Educationand Research curriculum requirements.  Basedon the projected data, it is anticipated that 15 students annually willcomplete the program.  LMI projectionsnote a need for 53 completers per year.

Program Goal

The Low Voltage Systems Technician certificate ofachievement program prepares students with skills and fundamental theories of fiberoptics, low voltage systems that include: video, audio, data, fire alarms,security system, access control, wireless technology in lighting and remotecontrol, and smart home instrumentation. The overall goals for the program are to provide the professionaltraining and development of in‐demand skills for employers and competenciesthat are transferable to all industries.

Program Requirements

The Low Voltage Systems Technician (LVST) is a new program that addresses a labor gap in Imperial Valley for technicians that can perform maintenance and repair of fire alarms, access controls, wireless communication,and other operations.  The program is consistent with the mission of the college by training students in demand occupations and with industry recognized skills/credentials.  The general infrastructure for instructional services already exists in the new and modern electronics laboratory.  Funding for equipment and support will beprovided with a variety of resources including strong workforce funds, Perkins, Proposition 39, and general fund.  Theprogram will be taught by existing full-time and part-time faculty.
