Studio Photography, Certificate of Achievement
New Program
Applied Photography (101200)
07/01/27
The Certificate of Achievement in Studio Photography provides opportunities for career preparation through courses that meet current workforce needs. Studio photography skills, including professional lighting techniques, camera operation, digital tethering, product styling, subject direction, and studio workflow management, are highly desirable in creative, commercial, and media-related industries, including marketing and advertising, digital media production, e-commerce, and publishing. The program provides a solid technical and creative foundation in studio photography and its applications, including portrait, product, food, and fashion photography, as well as professional studio practices and basic post-production workflows. Program outcomes align with industry standards for studio photography use, safety, and management, and prepare students for entry-level employment or freelance studio-based work. There are no prerequisite skills required for enrollment. Students who complete this certificate may also choose to continue their education by pursuing credit photography certificates or the Associate in Arts Degree in Photography.
Studio photography courses are consistently popular within the photography program, with more than 30 students enrolled in the Spring 2026 stacked credit and noncredit sections of Studio Photography I, II, and III. Given this strong demand, combined with current budget limitations that restrict the addition of new sections, it is reasonable to estimate that approximately 5-10 students will complete this certificate each year. To support student completion, PHOT 57—the program's capstone course, currently offered every other year—has been added as an alternative to Studio Photography III, which is offered once per year. This structure helps ensure that students can complete the certificate within a two-year timeframe. This certificate will also be stackable with the existing Certificates of Achievement in Photography and Commercial Photography, allowing students to build specialized skills while progressing through multiple credential pathways that support continued enrollment and clear academic pathways.

Although Foothill College currently offers a certificate in commercial photography, that credential is broad in scope and not specific to studio photography, which is a more specialized area of practice. There is demonstrated student interest in developing studio-specific skills without pursuing a comprehensive commercial photography pathway. The Certificate of Achievement in Studio Photography fills this gap by providing a focused, skill-based option within the existing photography curriculum. It complements existing offerings while creating a clear and targeted pathway for students seeking concentrated training in studio lighting, workflow, and production.
There is not another similar certificate in our service area or at De Anza College.
