ThePorterville College Licensed VocationalNursing Associate Degree Nursing (LVN-ADN) Program endorses the missionof Porterville College which is:“With students as our focus, Porterville College provides our local and diversecommunities quality education that promotes intellectual curiosity, personalgrowth, and lifelong learning, while preparing students for vocational andacademic success."

ThePorterville College LVN-ADNProgram adheres to this mission when offering the Associate Degree in Nursing.The mission of the nursing program is to provide an innovative,student-centered educational program that prepares diverse students ascandidates to become Registered Nurses to provide safe, quality, evidence-basednursing care in the current healthcare environment. The program ismarket-conscious as it prepares students to practice nursing in a variety ofhealthcare environments with input from the community represented through theprogram's Advisory Committee. Upon completion of the program the graduate is qualifiedto take the NCLEX-RN examination.

In alignment with themission of Porterville College, the LVN-ADN program also provides a solid basefor continued lifelong learning as a Professional Nurse. Although the LVN-ADNprogram is not considered a Transfer Program, the nursing program graduates areprepared with the necessary nursing knowledge, skills, and competencies tocontinue their education in a higher degree program. The nursing program hasarticulation agreements with upper level institutions in California to assiststudents in their quest for a baccalaureate in nursing degree.

NOTE: The California Board of Registered Nursing(BRN) protects the public by screening applicants for licensure in order toidentify potentially unsafe practitioners. The law provides for denial oflicensure for crimes or acts, which are substantially related to nursingqualifications, functions or duties. Conviction of any offenses other thanminor traffic violations must be reported to the Board of Registered Nursing atthe time of application for licensure. Business and Professions Code 480 andNurse Practice Act article 3 section 2761. NOTE: Social SecurityNumber (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number Requirement: Pursuantto Section 30(c) of the Business and Professions code the California Board ofRegistered Nursing (BRN) will not process any application for licensure unlessthe applicant provides a United State SSN or Individual Taxpayer IdentificationNumber. The Nursing Practice Act provides for a unified examination andlicensing application. Once an applicant passes the examination, a license is automaticallyissued. Under these circumstances the BRN cannot accept applications for theexamination and licensure without a SSN or Tax Payer Identification Number.

   ENROLLMENTELIGIBILITY

   Tobe eligible for enrollment in the program, the student must meet the followingcriteria:

• Possession of a current clear and activeCalifornia Vocational Nurse (LVN) license at the time of application andthroughout program completion.

• Intravenous Certification required.

• Completion of a minimum of six monthsfull-time equivalent LVN work experience within the past year.

• A grade of “C” or better required for all Prerequisites

• 2.5minimum GPA in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology

  • ANAT P110 (Human Anatomy) 4units at Porterville College, or equivalent course at another accreditedcollege.

  • PHYL P101 (IntroductoryPhysiology) 5 units at Porterville College, or equivalent 4-5 semester unitphysiology course at another accredited college.

  • MICR P106 (Microbiology) 5units at Porterville College, or equivalent 4-5 semester unit microbiologycourse at another accredited college.

• 2.5minimum GPA in remaining prerequisite courses for thenursing program.

  • ENGL P101A (ExpositoryComposition) 4 units at Porterville College, or equivalent course at anotheraccredited college.

  • MATH P051 (IntermediateAlgebra) 4 units OR higher atPorterville College or equivalent 3-4 semester unit math course equivalent atanother accredited college.

• Agrade of “C” or higher in NURS P171 LVNTransition to RN Program.

   

  ENROLLMENTPROCESS

  Eligiblestudents are selected for the program according to the following steps:

• Pre-enrollmentapplications and deadlines for the LVN-ADN program are available from theHealth Careers Division or program website.

• Selectionis based on a random selection process from among the qualified applicants andis submit to space availability. Students must reapply each semester. There isno waiting list.

• Onlystudents who meet the educational and pre-nursing requirements and follow thepre-enrollment procedures will be considered for the program. Meeting all theserequirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

CONDITIONSOF ENROLLMENT

As a condition ofenrollment into the Nursing program, the student is required to have a physicalexamination, inoculations, tuberculosis clearance, drug screen, backgroundcheck, and current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card(at the student’s expense).

NOTE: The student isresponsible for providing uniforms, laboratory fees, necessary equipment andtransportation to off-campus laboratory locations. There are morning,afternoon, evening, and weekend clinical experiences that may change withlimited notice.

A grade of “C” or betteris required in each nursing course for progression toward the LVN-ADN Degree.

Challenge/Advanced Placement into the Nursing Program forMilitary Personnel

Incompliance with Senate Bill 466, Military Personnel and Veterans may beeligible for advanced placement into the Porterville College LVN-ADN Program.Three pathways have been established to assist with obtaining nursing creditfor previous education and experience for the Basic Medical TechnicianCorpsman, the Basic Medical Technician Corpsman with an active California LVNlicense, and the Independent Duty Corpsman/Advanced Army Medic/AdvancedAirforce Medic.

All applicants must meet all general entrancerequirements of the Associate Degree Nursing Program, including completion ofdesignated prerequisites. Students must pass the first and/or second semesterwritten challenge exams with 75% or higher and obtain a satisfactory level ofachievement on skills competency. Military Challenge students will not beadmitted if they have previously failed a nursing course at another nursingschool.
