Clinical Genetics and Molecular Biologist Scientist

The Clinical Genetics and Molecular Biology Scientist Program prepares students for a career at the forefront of genetic research and healthcare. This comprehensive program covers advanced topics in molecular genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics, emphasizing hands-on laboratory techniques and data analysis. Students will gain expertise in genetic testing, interpretation of results, and the ethical implications of genetic research. By the end of the program, graduates will be prepared to take the ASCP exam. Upon passing the exam, they may apply for licensure with the California Department of Public Health to work as a Certified Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS).

Enrollment is limited to clinical training sites and available trainers. Thus, the program may produce few to up to 15 completers per year. 

The overarching goal is for student of the program to pass the ASCP exam to become a licensed CGMBS. Additionally, the objectives of the program are:

• Master Clinical Genetics Principles
  Equip students with a thorough understanding of clinical genetics, molecular biology, and genomics to support advanced patient care and genetic testing.

• Develop Laboratory Proficiency
  Provide hands-on training in molecular techniques and laboratory practices, ensuring students can confidently perform genetic analyses and interpret results.

• Foster Ethical and Professional Standards
  Instill a strong foundation in the ethical implications of genetic research and testing, preparing students to navigate the complexities of clinical practice and contribute to responsible healthcare.

The certificate will consist of two courses taken over 2 semesters. Trainees must obtain the CGBMS trainee license available through the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Trainees must meet the requirements of the CDPH in order to participate in the program. Full time clinical training hours will also be required over the course of a year to obtain licensure.

This program will be housed in the biotechnology program within the Math and Sciences division

None are present in the community colleges in Orange County. College of the Canyons has the generalist clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) program. This is the specialty CLS licensing program.

Up to 14 individuals can be trained a year depending on available trainers and host sites. Cohorts will likely be smaller due to this restriction.
