Course Description:
Barbering is the profession and practice of cutting, styling, grooming, and caring for men's hair, beard, and facial hair. Barbering involves various skills, including haircutting, shaving, beard trimming, facial treatments, scalp treatments, hairstyling, haircoloring, and chemical texture services. The curriculum offers both theoretical and practical components of these topics with hands-on training with clients in a work-based salon setting. Students will experience up-to-date demonstrations of skills necessary to obtain a job as a barber stylist, product sales, platform artist, salon manager, entrepreneur, business owner and or educator.
Program Goals and Objectives:
This program is designed to prepare students for employment in the barbering industry as barbers. The program offers both theoretical and practical components with hands on training on clients in a salon setting. Upon completion of the barbering courses and a minimum of 1,000 clocked hours, students are prepared to take and pass the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam to become a licensed barber. Courses may lead to an Associate degree in Barbering and/or a Certificate of Achievement.
Program Requirements:
Students must complete all 5 barbering courses with a minimum grade of 75% and have a minimum of 1000 clocked hours to complete the program and qualify to take the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam to be a licensed barber.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
PSLO 1: Be trained theoretically and practically in haircutting, shaving, beard trimming, facial treatments, scalp treatments, hairstyling, haircoloring, and chemical texture services
PSLO 2: Demonstrate skills related to barbering using proper infection control procedures.
PSLO 3: Be prepared to pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology written exam and acquire licensure.
The annual enrollment for this program will be 22 students that will be eligible to earn their barbering certificate or degree.

Upon completion of this program, students will have the skills necessary to perform and obtain a job as a barber stylist, product sales representative, platform artist, salon manager, entrepreneur, business owner, and educator.

We are hoping that this program brings males into our program which historically has been an underrepresented demographic. We plan on doing an open house to introduce our program as well as participate in outreach events.
