PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The Creative AI Design Certificate updates the Mobile and Web Design Level I Certificate to reflect industry adoption of AI tools in creative design practice. Since 2022, demand for designers who can direct AI systems for visual, audio, and content production has grown across creative industries. This update prepares students to use generative AI as a design instrument while maintaining creative judgment and professional standards.
The certificate is open to all students. Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
- Direct AI systems to produce professional visual and audio assets while maintaining creative control over final outputs.
- Evaluate and refine AI-generated content for professional quality, applying design theory and aesthetic judgment to generative workflows.
- Create experiences that are both meaningful and contextually relevant.
The certificate prepares students for employment as Generative Design Specialists, AI Visual Designers, Creative Technologists, Prompt Engineers, AI Sound Designers, and AI Content Strategists.

. MASTER PLANNING
The Creative AI Design Certificate sits within BCC's Multimedia Arts Mobile and Web (MM/MW) department and updates the Mobile and Web Design Level I Certificate. BCC has offered courses in this discipline for over a decade, building from its original Introduction to Web Design through successive updates tracking industry shifts in mobile, responsive, and interactive design.
The certificate supports BCC's mission of providing educational opportunities that lead to careers and aligns with the college's role as an accessible urban institution serving students across the East Bay. The program is open to all students. All courses are available as distance education. No significant new expenditure is required. The program uses existing faculty, facilities, and equipment.
ITEM 5. ENROLLMENT AND COMPLETER PROJECTIONS
The courses in the Creative AI Design certificate have been offered continuously in the MM/MW program for multiple years under their prior MMART designations. Updated course numbers and titles reflect revised content integrating AI design tools, not new offerings. MW 004 (formerly MM/MW 4) maintains consistent enrollment around 39 students per offering. MW 002 (formerly MM/MW 2) enrolled 24 students in its most recent semester, and MW 003 (formerly MMART 167) enrolled 39 students in S26.
This certificate requires MW 002, MW 003, and MW 004, with students selecting two electives from MW 001, MW 005, MW 006, and MW 011. All courses are drawn from a shared discipline schedule of 7 sections per semester serving all four certificates and the AA degree simultaneously. Every required and elective course in this certificate is offered at least once per year within that schedule. Program completion is projected at 25 to 30 students annually by the end of Year Two.
ITEM 6. PLACE OF PROGRAM IN CURRICULUM/SIMILAR PROGRAMS
The Creative AI Design Certificate prepares students for creative technology roles focused on visual design, sound design, and generative content production with AI tools. This certificate is expected to attract students interested in creative AI applications who may not identify with traditional computer science programs. Students can move between this certificate and other MM/MW certificates, applying shared coursework across programs. The program does not replace any existing BCC programs. It updates and renames the Mobile and Web Design Level I Certificate.
ITEM 7. SIMILAR PROGRAMS AT OTHER COLLEGES IN SERVICE AREA
There are no similar programs combining visual design, sound design, and generative AI content creation at community colleges within the BCC service area. Existing multimedia programs at nearby colleges focus on general graphic design or web development rather than the AI-integrated creative design approach of this certificate. Laney College offers an AI program focused on programming and machine learning engineering, which serves a different student population and career pathway.
