Catalog Description
Students in the architectural design program will develop the necessary skills to analyze, modify or create architectural space and the abilities to present their ideas in graphic form using a variety of media. The program emphasizes spatial and architectural theories relating to design, architectural history, and methods of graphic composition and presentation. This certificate provides a foundation in core curriculum required for admission to the University of California Architecture program at Berkeley and also provides a strong foundation in core subjects for continued work in the design field.
Students seeking to transfer to UC Berkeley in architecture are advised to complete this certificate of achievement in architectural design.
To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Required courses are available in the day, and some are also offered in the evening.
Enrollment Completer Projections
The architecture program review data is presented in the following chart indicating the enrollment and completion data for that program. It is anticipated that the addition of the architecture design certificate program will double the number of completions annually. Since no additional sections of coursework are to be added to the schedule, impact on FTES will be small.

Program Goal
Currently we offer an AS degree in Architecture Design but there is no option for a certificate. The AS degree requires completion of a large number of courses in the major and a relatively small number of students (approximately 6-10) obtain this degree. We would like to add a certificate of achievement that allows all students transferring to UC Berkeley with the assist.org transfer agreement to obtain a certificate through DVC, while maintaining our AS degree as a stackable degree that transfers to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. (Cal Poly currently requires additional classes for admission to their five year B.Arch program). Current transfer numbers indicate that we would be able to reward approximately 30-40 students with this certificate in architectural design at the end of their studies at DVC before transferring and would be able to offer approximately 5-10 AS degrees to students completing further units in the stackable curriculum.
