Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Emissions Service provides training on vehicle emission systems, including their basic operation, function, service,and maintenance. The systems include on-board diagnostics (OBD), engine, exhaust,and fuel emission systems. This certificate is designed to prepare students to become employees for entry-level positions at local automotive dealerships,independent repair facilities, national repair chains, fleets, and parts suppliers. The applicable courses are National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) compliant. Oxnard College is a Bureau of Automotive Repair Certified Training Institution for the SMOG courses and houses the State referee. This coursework allows students to apply for the California Bureau of Auto Repair Smog Technician license that allows an individual to inspect and certify emission control systems on vehicles subject to the smog check program at licensed stations in all areas of the state.

·        Diagnose and repair or replace engine, exhaust, and fuel emission systems

·        Comply with personal and environmental safety practices in accordance with applicable safety and environmental regulations.

·        Integrate and analyze online service data, written repair material and technical service bulletins to repair and service a vehicle.

·        Demonstrate proficiency in the use of specialized automotive service tools, electronic diagnostic equipment and basic hand tools.

·        Demonstrate the use and care of basic automotive tools and equipment.

This program is designed to be completed over three semesters. Like all of the new COAs being proposed in Automotive Technology, this is stackable and students working toward their AS degree may complete various COAs as they take courses.
