Catalog Description

In this biomanufacturing program, students will gain key knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to work in the biomanufacturing industry, which uses biological systems to produce biofuels, vaccines, pharmaceutical drugs, and other therapeutic agents. Students will get hands on experience with production and analysis of biologically relevant molecules. Students learn both basic and advanced techniques in biotechnology and biomanufacturing such as genetic engineering, cell culture, chromatography including HPLC, and biochemical analysis as well as how to do technical writing, approaches to quality in the biomanufacturing industry, and requirements to work in a regulated environment. This program will train students to work as in a variety of jobs, including bioprocessing technicians, research and development lab technicians, and quality control/quality assurance associates.

Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The Introduction to Biotechnology course provides students with basic theoretical and practical knowledge about biology and biotechnology. Students will gain additional theoretical knowledge and lab skills in Fundamentals of Chemistry. In Techniques in Cell and Molecular Biology, students build upon their knowledge from Introduction to Biotechnology and perform additional laboratory techniques including cell culture. Students become familiar with principles of quality, current good manufacturing practices, and proper documentation in Quality and Regulatory Practices in Biomanufacturing. Elementary Statistics will compliment the Quality and Regulatory Practices in Biomanufacturing course as students will learn how to apply statistical analyses which are heavily relied upon in quality control. Technical Communication for Regulated Environments will guide students to write and give oral presentations on technical content effectively. Students will perform the processes involved with biomanufacturing in the Biomanufacturing course.
