Catalog Description
The Digital Web and Mobile Development program is designed for students who are interested in entering the fast-paced fields of web development and mobile app development. A student will learn the latest in web languages, basic web and mobile programming and appropriate use of digital media by building a digital portfolio of their work. Students can focus on either web development or mobile app development through the certificate program or combine the two disciplines for an Associate’s degree. Many of these courses are offered in the online environment to accommodate those students who are presently employed. The web and mobile degree option emphasizes the following competencies: managing the development of a project, delivery of comprehensive, integrated digital media via the web or mobile application The student will also develop a set of customer liaison skills as they integrating all facets of digital media into an effective web or mobile application.
As a result of ongoing changes in technology, the need to expand competencies, and changing transfer requirements, certificate and degree requirements may also change. If you note changes in degrees or certificate requirements, or if courses are not offered in a particular semester, please consult with a counselor or faculty member on how best to complete the program in which you are enrolled.

Acute labor market demand for trained workers in Web Development (front
end and full stack) as well as the development of Mobile Applications. This demand is
documented in employment narrative above and discussion below.
1. To capture comprehensive data on the mobile media labor market and
workforce, the Centers of Excellence (COE) conducted a statewide employer
survey and analyzed responses from 403 mobile media employers. The survey
provided insights on job growth, skills, and requirements for each of the six
occupations. Respondents reported that they were planning to create more than
1,300 new mobile media jobs over the next 12 months. Extrapolating this number
to the universe of mobile media firms means that California could add as many as
12,620 mobile media jobs in one year.
2. Job growth will be highest for software engineers in mobile media and
lowest for graphic designers and/or multimedia artists in mobile media. Though the
majority of these jobs will require a Bachelor’s degree, there are positions available
for professionals holding an Associate degree or Certificate from a community
college. Thirty-six percent of employers hiring computer support specialists in
mobile media stated that they prefer to hire individuals with an Associate degree
or Certificate. Additionally, 27 percent of employers hiring graphic designers
and/or multi-media artists in mobile media reported that they prefer to hire
individuals with an Associate degree or Certificate.
3. In light of the rapid growth in mobile media technologies and occupations,
community colleges should respond quickly to meet the needs of employers. While
some community colleges offer courses related to mobile media, only two
community colleges currently offer certificates in mobile media. Some colleges are
working to develop new certificate programs, but given the high number of jobs
impacted by the emergence of mobile media, more training is needed for both
incumbent workers and new workers.
4. This program requires adjustment as a web development (programming,
scripting, database, and design) from the current version which focuses on web
design. Also, additional faculty members and current training for existing faculty

Deans from Cabrillo College, Gavilan College, and Monterey Peninsula College have been contacted and responses have not yet been received.
