Catalog Description

The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions photography. The core learned disciplines are photography, photographic lighting, an understanding of the visual elements, exposure to art and design history, conceptual visual problem solving, and the production of a portfolio using industry-standard software and processes.


Upon completion of the required courses with at least a “C” or “P” (pass) grade in each course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

Program Goal

The program goals align with career preparation for an entry-level position as a photographer. 

1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to implement the principles, elements, and language common to photography.
2. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to critique their own work, as well as the work of other students; and defend their creative choices verbally and in writing.
3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to create a portfolio or "body of work".
4. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to implement industry standard raster imaging applications.
5. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to use lighting equipment, cameras and industry standard photographic equipment.
6. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to distinguish historic and contemporary photographic practices.

Program Requirements Narrative

This is a revision to an existing program.

The program will specifically align with Bakersfield College's Strategic Directions:

  • Strategic Direction #1— Student Learning
  • Strategic Direction #2— Student Progression and Completion.


For both strategic directions there are sub goals that relate to CTE and this program will help to address these.

On the state level the program aligns with the Chancellor’s office Vision for Success and addresses:

  • Goal 1: Over five years, increase by at least 20 percent the number of California Community College students annually who acquire associate degrees, credentials, certificates, or specific skill sets that prepare them for an in-demand job.
  • Goal 4: Over five years, increase the percent of exiting CTE students who report being employed in their field of study.
