AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ENGINE PERFORMANCE SPECIALIST

Many businesses need technicians with very specific skills to repair emission system failures or complex problems relating to the fuel, ignition, and/or engine systems. This specialized degree includes hybrid and electric vehicle, and gasoline and diesel fuel systems training. Successful students will qualify to take the California Bureau of Automotive Licensing exams for Smog Inspector and Repair licensing. Work experience is a requirement for this major, which ensures student competency and success. All students are required to complete a digital portfolio resume used for assessment and practicum. Students completing all courses and general education courses will receive an Associates of Science during Commencement. Students completing all automotive course requirements will receive a Certificate of Achievement during Commencement.
Enrollment completers are projected to be 20 per year.

The automotive technology program offers innovative instruction alongside work-based experience, where students gain real world expertise. Education planning is the key to the automotive major pathways, as each student is provided a customized vision for the future. Majors and certificates are Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation (ASE) accredited. Students working toward an Associates of Science (A.S.) degree gain work competency by participating in a community of practice that includes mentoring technicians, managers, business owners, field service engineers, government representatives, faculty, counselors, and other student services. The program uses competency documentation through a digital portfolio, which generates a vast resume of industry and college certifications for a rewarding career. Consistent communication with industry leaders through required advisory meetings has created innovations to improve job placement and wage earnings. The Automotive Associates of Science specializations gained through work and study are transferable to many industries, making graduates valuable technical experts and future industry leaders through continuing education as lifelong learners.

Presumably all of the colleges still report gainful employment data, in some way, to our potential students, so, this should inform students' decisions. Tina Ngo Bartel · 03/06/21 Cuyamaca College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. There is a supply gap (110 annual job openings), entry-level wages are $14.69 and median wages are $20.74. Based on available LMI, the COE recommends to proceed with a new program, but recommends that colleges communicate to students that the occupation’s entry-level wages are below the living wage, suggesting that more training and experience are needed for workers in this occupation to reach median wage levels.
