This certificate program fits within the Administration of Justice Department and is a career technical education program support future and incumbent criminal justice professionals.  It furthers the college’s workforce training mission and supports students who seek to transfer to a4-year institution.  This certificate program responds to and complies with the legislative intent of AB846 signed into law in October 2020 amending section 1031 of the California Government Code. It also supports the legislative intent of AB1460 signed into law in 2020requiring ethnic studies for students seeking to graduate from the CSU system. Finally, this certificate program is responsive to the California Community College Chancellor’s “call to action” in June of 2020 asking for change in police training.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the history, structure, and functions of the main components of the American criminal justice system.
  2. Produce written communications that meet the standards for transfer and a criminal justice system professional.
  3. Examine critically contemporary problems and issues within criminal justice.
  4. Examine bias and cultural competence in the criminal justice system.

Napa Valley College currently provides entry-level and in-service workforce training for law enforcement officers, 9-1-1 dispatchers, and correctional officers. There are approximately 90,000 law enforcement officers and 9-1-1 dispatchers and37,000 correctional officers working in California.

 

The Administration of Justice Department prepares students for this sizeable workforce.  This certificate program provides an additional step in the pathway to a two-year degree and or transfer to a 4-years institution.

This certificate program fits within the existing Administration of Justice Department with support from the Child Family Studies and Education Department and Humanities Department. No additional curriculum or section offerings are required.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
Although there have been conversations about developing this type of certificate at other community colleges in the region, this program is unique in the region if not in the entire state. NVC faculty collaborate regionally and statewide with discipline colleagues on an ongoing basis to ensure alignment and best practices. This certificate is unique in the region and are not offered by any other college in our surrounding area, so there will be no impact on the other colleges.
