Catalog Description

This Certificate of Achievement will prepare students for an entry-level position in the human services/social work field and for career advancement for those already employed in these occupations. Jobs may include case management, care giver, advocate, and activities coordinator. Students learn the skills and knowledge necessary to potentially transfer to upper division programs in social work or human services and to be employed at the paraprofessional entry level in social work and human services agencies.

• Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population in resolving chronic and crisis issues that impact family, health, employability, and social standing.

Program Goal

The Human Services Generalist program prepares students for careers in the helping professions, may prepare students for the first two years of their transferable Human Services education and enhances the skills of persons already employed in this field.  In addition, the students will be provided with several personal/interpersonal skills needed to live healthy lives and deal with the stressful demands of daily living.

Program Requirements Narrative

The existing program will include two new courses, removal of three required courses to be replaced with formerly elective options, removal of five courses from the prior program of study and a reduction of total units required for the major from 24-24.5 to 18. The courses that are being added to the required core (as an “either/or” option) are:

ETHST 1: introduction to Ethnic Studies OR SOCIO 11: Race & Ethnic Relations in the U.S.

The courses that are being removed from the required core:

HS 43: Case Management: Treatment & Aftercare

HS 48: Group & Family Process

HS 50: Law and Ethics

The HS 207 course is being moved from electives to required.
