The Journalism Department offers practical newspaper experience and academic preparation for students preparing to transfer to four-year institutions. Emphasis is placed on new technologies and preparation for media jobs in a computer-oriented society. Additional areas of study include journalism history, ethics, law, and the role of the press in our society.

This program is not a new program but a substantial update to an existing program. However, we cannot find an documentation of previous BACCC endorsement and COCI will not take the update without it. 

The Associate in Arts Degree in Journalism is designed for students planning to transfer to college or university and acquire practical experience in the wide-ranging communications field.

Item 1.            Program Goals and Objectives

 

The Associate of Arts degree in Journalism combines research, organization, news-gathering, critical thinking, and editing skills to teach students industry relevant expertise that can lead to a career in or outside of the newsroom. Courses focus on not only writing skills, but podcasting, video producing skills, and other digital techniques.

 

Program Outcomes

 

1.     Assemble a portfolio of appropriate photographs,writings, journals or digital media that reflects the skills and understandin gof techniques of journalism.

2.     Write news, features, and opinion pieces in newspape rstyle.

3.     Apply media law, fact-checking and ethics to the journalistic process.

The data shows a robust growth in the number of students at Laney College who are in majors that require rigorous training in lower-division computer science courses.

Item 15.          Library and/or Learning Resource Plan

 

Computers are an important topic in any library; Laney’s offerings have been and should continue to be sufficient for our needs.

 

Item 16.          Facilities and Equipment Plan

 

Laney College remains committed to maintain state-of-the-art computer labs. The department is working on a grant funded remodel of the district’s only journalism lab and newsroom. This update includes: new flooring, furniture, and computers. In addition, our department is digitizin gour publication, The Laney Tower, and will launch a new website and publication name in 2020.

 

Item 17.          Financial Support Plan

 

The source of support for ordinary costs of instructions will be covered by the general funds available for instruction of courses through the Peralta District.  Instructional equipment grants, primarily Strong Workforce, Perkins funds for CTE programs have been used, and will continue to be used for purchase of new and updated equipment.

 

Item 18.          Faculty Qualifications and Availability

 

The program is part of the Liberal Arts division of Laney College.  The JOURN faculty at Laney College currently consists of 1 full time instructor and 1 adjunct instructor.  All faculty members meet the Minimum qualifications for JOURN department faculty.

All courses taught at Laney College for the program meet accreditation standards for Laney College. Courses will articulate for elective units with transfer institutions but do not necessarily transfer course to course. There are no licensing standards being satisfied by these courses.
