This certificate is designed to prepare students to work with young children in a variety of early care and education settings. Completion of the Certificate of Achievement fulfills the child development coursework requirement for the California Child Development Permit at the Teacher level. This Certificate of Achievement requires completion of the major (24 units) with a “C” or better grade in each course and seventeen units in general education. Some of the courses may have prerequisites.
Program Learning Outcomes: Supporting Early Learning and Development; planning and guiding early learning and development; creating and maintaining program policies and practices; advancing the early childhood profession.
Twenty-four (24) units in child development courses are required. Twelve (12) units must be from the core courses.
Twelve (12) additional units are required in child development support courses. Seventeen (17) units in general education. Experience: At least three hours per day for a minimum of 175 days in a four-year period. Experience: Child Development Permit: Teacher as required for employment in funded child care programs. State Department of Education, Title V, DSS (Department of Social Services).

Experience: At least three hours per day for a minimum of 175 days in a four-year period.
For the Child Development Teacher Permit, the student must apply through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. You can receive evaluation assistance on your permit application to make sure the application is complete at Tulare County Office of Education in Visalia, and they will also submit the application to the State Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Porterville College Child Development has three major responsibilities: academic preparation, workforce development and leadership. The Child Development Program provides students with academic courses based on child development theory and best practices in early care and education. Child Development students are provided with courses that orient them to the field of early care and education; providing the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful in the workforce. Early Childhood Education/Child Development faculty engage in leadership through collaboration with educational, community, industry, state and federal partners.

Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Students will assess their own skills and abilities and apply knowledge of development and major theoretical frameworks to child observations.
2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of and explain children’s development from conception through adolescence in the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains.
3. Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills when describing the cultural,
economic, political, and historical contexts that impact children’s development.
4. Students will demonstrate effective communication and comprehension skills while describing strategies for collaboration with families to support children’s development and learning that are respectful, reciprocal, and engaging.
